You are the light of the world
Jesus was the light of the world when He was in the world
Jesus said that He is the light of the world.
Jn 8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."
What is the chief function of the light? Those who follow the light will not walk in darkness.
But this was only while Jesus was in the world.
Jn 9:5 “While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."
God has now made us the light of the world
God made a promise to His people – that He would make them the light of the nations.
Is 42:6 "I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I will also hold you by the hand and watch over you, and I will appoint you as a covenant to the people, as a light to the nations,
When Jesus went away He made us the light of the world.
Mt 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house."
When you go about your life everyday, do you recognize that you are a light in the darkness?
Do you feel like a light in the darkness?
Do you realize that you have this responsibility?
If people follow you, will they be walking in darkness or in light? Jesus said that those who follow Him will not walk in darkness.
What does it take to become a light?
We must understand what the eye (or the lamp of the body) is.
Mt 6:22-23 “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!"
What is He talking about? Read the surrounding context Mt 6:19-24 – He is talking about who you are devoted to – God or mammon. If you are devoted to God then your eye is clear and your body is full of light. If you are devoted to anything else then your body is full of darkness.
We have got to watch out that our devotion to God is fervent. Watch out that that devotion does not die out.
Lk 11:35 Then watch out that the light in you is not darkness.
What does it mean to be a light?
Our light is our good works – our behavior.
Mt 5:16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
The fruit of the light consists of goodness and righteousness and truth.
Eph 5:8-10 for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth),
Remember that God is the source of our light
It is God who makes us light. That is why people should give glory to God when they see our light shine.
Ps 18:28 For You light my lamp; The LORD my God illumines my darkness.
Ps 36:9 For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.
It is important to understand that God is the source of our light so that we may not become proud when God does great things through us.
