Jesus changes water into wine

Jn 2:1-12 1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." 4 And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it." 6 Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. 7 Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." So they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it to him. 9 When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew ), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, 10 and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now." 11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.

Per verse 11, this was the beginning of the signs Jesus did; it was His first miracle. It was special – this miracle manifested the glory of Jesus (that is, the great thing that He came to do), which was to pay for the sins of mankind, so that we could be born again. Its special features were brought out perfect by His changing water to wine at a wedding. Let me explain further…

In God’s view, an unbeliever is tasteless and odorless – like water, but a believer is tasty and smells nice – like wine. This is because, when we are born again, and the Holy Spirit begins to dwell in us, we are a new creation. It is as if we have transformed from water into wine.

Wines typically contain about 86% water, 12% ethanol, 1% glycerol, 0.4% organic acids, 0.1% tannins and phenolics, and 0.5% other compounds. Water is just two atoms of hydrogen attached to one atom of oxygen.

Jesus came to change water into wine! Converting water to wine is like changing some of the DNA of a human being – changing him in the innermost part from a selfish person to a selfless person.

Jesus changing water into wine symbolizes the spiritual change that takes place when a person is born again. He becomes a new creation, moving from tasteless and odorless water to a wine that smells and tastes good.

For this transformation to happen to us we have to be like the servant who obeys, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”

Furthermore, a wedding is the beginning of a joint venture between a man and a woman. This wedding at Cana symbolized the beginning of a joint venture between God and man – which was the ministry of the Son of God and the Son of Man.

Are you still tasteless and odorless like water? Or have you let Jesus change you from water to wine?

Are you still selfish, or are you becoming more and more like Jesus as the years pass by?
