Unscriptural methods to get sound doctrine

Having no method

Okay, let me ask you a few questions…

What would you think of a tennis player who wants to play in the Wimbledon tournament and yet has no strategy for practicing?

You’d wonder if he was serious, wouldn’t you?

What do you think God thinks of a person who just reads his Bible as if it were a fiction novel?

If you were a professor and you wrote a book, and your students just read a few pages of it every so often and then forgot about what they read, would they get an ‘A’ in your class?

There are people all over the world who, on Sunday morning, tell God how wonderful and amazingly smart He is – and then they don’t bother to read seriously the things that He wrote. Will God have a high opinion of such people?

Well then, do you have a method for understanding Scripture? Have you spent any time thinking about what it takes to get sound doctrine? Have you tried to get your method from Scripture?

Here is my point: if you have any respect for God you will read what He wrote, and you will think about what He wrote, and you will try and understand why He wrote it. You will try and search out a way to receive and keep the maximum truth out of God’s word.

No student of the martial arts would dare ignore the word of their master. What then shall we say about Christians who have no time or desire to read and understand God’s word?
